Trial Begins in Deadly Trader Joe’s Standoff Case

Opening statements began Monday in the trial of Gene Evin Atkins, accused of murder in a 2018 standoff at a Trader Joe’s in Silver Lake.

The incident led to the death of store manager Melyda Corado during a shootout between Atkins and the police.

The events unfolded on a Saturday afternoon when Atkins allegedly shot his 78-year-old grandmother, Mary Elizabeth Madison, and wounded his girlfriend in South Los Angeles. After the shooting, Atkins fled with his girlfriend, leading the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) on a high-speed chase. According to ABC7NY, the chase ended when Atkins crashed near the Trader Joe’s on Hyperion Avenue.

During the standoff, Atkins exchanged gunfire with officers, resulting in Corado’s death. LAPD Chief Michel Moore confirmed that Corado was accidentally shot by police gunfire as she tried to exit the store. Atkins eventually surrendered after holding hostages for several hours.

Atkins faces multiple charges, including murder, attempted murder, and kidnapping. His trial is being closely watched, with the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office reviewing the case. The names of the officers involved in the shooting are expected to be released later this week.
