SCOTUS Upholds Ruling Against Virginia Congressional Map

The Supreme Court of the United States has rejected an attempt by Virginia Democrats to revive a congressional map that was expected to increase their seats in the House of Representatives. On Friday (May 15), the court upheld a decision by the Virginia Supreme Court that struck down the map due to legal flaws in the process that placed it on the ballot.

Earlier this year, Virginia’s General Assembly adopted a new map favoring Democrats in 10 of the state’s 11 congressional seats. The map’s implementation relied on a constitutional amendment approved by Virginia voters in April. However, the Virginia Supreme Court ruled that the amendment process was invalid because proper procedures were not followed, leading to the map’s invalidation.

Virginia Democrats, along with Attorney General Jay Jones, filed an emergency appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court, arguing that the state court’s ruling was “deeply mistaken” and conflicted with federal law. They contended that the ruling deprived voters and candidates of their right to lawfully enacted congressional districts. However, the Supreme Court typically defers to state courts on matters of state law, making the appeal an uphill battle.

Chief Justice John Roberts, who handles emergency appeals from Virginia, had requested a response from the Republicans who challenged the amendment process. Despite the appeal, the Supreme Court’s decision leaves Virginia’s old congressional map in place for the upcoming midterm elections.

The case is part of a broader national debate on redistricting and gerrymandering, with both parties seeking to gain an advantage in congressional elections. The Supreme Court’s ruling follows a recent decision that weakened the Voting Rights Act, further intensifying redistricting efforts across the country.
