2026 Memorial Day Travel Predicted to Break Records

Memorial Day travel in 2026 is expected to set a new record, with AAA projecting that 45 million Americans will travel at least 50 miles from home between Thursday, May 21, and Monday, May 25. This forecast surpasses last year’s numbers, indicating a strong desire for leisure travel despite rising fuel costs.

Of the total travelers, 39.1 million are anticipated to drive to their destinations. According to AAA, drivers should prepare for higher gas prices, which are the steepest since 2022. The heaviest traffic congestion is expected on Thursday (May 21) and Friday (May 22) between 3-6 p.m., as well as on Monday (May 25) afternoon. In contrast, Sunday is predicted to have the lightest traffic.

Additionally, 3.66 million travelers are expected to fly, accounting for about 8% of the total. Notably, round-trip domestic flights are 6% cheaper compared to last year, providing a more affordable option for air travelers. Other modes of travel, such as buses, trains, and cruises, are also projected to see an increase in usage during the holiday weekend.

Stacey Barber, vice president of AAA Travel, emphasized the significance of Memorial Day as the unofficial start of summer, noting that many Americans are prioritizing leisure travel during this three-day weekend.

Top domestic destinations include Seattle, New York, and Orlando, Florida, while international hotspots feature Rome, Paris, and Vancouver, Canada. For more details, visit NewsNation and The Hill.
