Controversy Over ‘History Rocks 250’ Assembly in Chino Hills

A planned upcoming assembly titled “History Rocks 250” at Canyon Hills Junior High School in Chino Hills, has stirred controversy among parents.

The event, celebrating America’s 250th anniversary, is set to take place on campus and is described as “patriotic, interactive, meaningful and fun.” However, concerns have arisen regarding the program’s content and the absence of an opt-out option for students.

Some parents have expressed unease about the assembly’s affiliations with organizations such as Turning Point USA, Hillsdale College, and the America First Policy Institute. Kristi Hirts, a concerned parent, stated, “We are not given the right to opt out,” highlighting the lack of an option for children to be excused from attending.

The “History Rocks 250” tour is part of the America 250 Civics Education Coalition, aiming to promote civic education ahead of the nation’s semi quincentennial. Education Secretary Linda McMahon emphasized the importance of patriotism during a previous announcement in September 2025.

School officials, including Sonja Shaw, president of the Chino Valley Unified School District Board of Education, have dismissed concerns, describing the event as a patriotic celebration. Shaw stated, “There’s nothing controversial about this,” and noted that the content aligns with what students already learn in class.

Despite these assurances, some parents remain frustrated by what they perceive as a lack of transparency. Parent Corina Gonzales expressed surprise at the secrecy surrounding the event, questioning why permission slips are not required for this assembly as they are for other potentially controversial content.

The assembly is scheduled to proceed as planned, with school officials maintaining their support for the event while some parents continue to voice objections.
