Trump and Brazilian President Lula Conclude White House Meeting

President Donald Trump and Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva concluded their meeting at the White House on Thursday (May 7). While an on-camera appearance was anticipated, President Trump instead shared on Truth Social that the meeting “went very well,” highlighting discussions on trade and tariffs.

The meeting addressed the 50% tariff imposed by the Trump administration on Brazilian products last year, which was later withdrawn. However, concerns about potential new tariffs remain a pressing issue for Brazil. The leaders also discussed critical minerals and the U.S. investigation into Brazil’s Pix payment system, as reported by BBC News.

Despite past tensions, including Lula’s criticism of Trump over the Iran war and other issues, the meeting aimed to improve U.S.-Brazil relations. The two leaders have had a strained relationship, partly due to Trump’s close ties with Lula’s predecessor, Jair Bolsonaro, who was convicted of attempting a coup.

Both leaders agreed to have further discussions in the coming months, and representatives from both countries are scheduled to meet to discuss key elements of their bilateral relationship. President Lula is expected to hold a press conference later at the Brazilian embassy in Washington.
