Culver City Plans to Allow Drinks Downtown During Events

Culver City is taking steps to allow eventgoers to carry alcoholic drinks in designated areas of downtown during special events.

The City Council unanimously introduced an ordinance this month to create a Downtown Entertainment Zone, following the lead of Santa Monica’s similar initiative. This program aims to support economic activity, increase foot traffic, and enhance the visitor experience.

The proposed Entertainment Zone will cover the Downtown Business Improvement District, including Culver Boulevard, Washington Boulevard, and nearby streets. During approved events, patrons can purchase alcoholic beverages from participating businesses and consume them within the zone. The ordinance requires ongoing evaluation to address public safety, traffic, and operational costs.

Safety is a priority, with plans for law enforcement and private security presence during events. The Downtown Culver City Business Association will assist in managing the zone, distributing wristbands and cups, and coordinating with businesses. The program prohibits outside alcohol, glass, metal, and single-use plastic containers.

The ordinance must return for formal adoption before the zone can be activated. The first event planned for the Entertainment Zone is the Third Wednesday summer series, starting Wednesday, June 17.
