Weekly Jobless Claims Fall To Lowest Level In Over Fifty Years

Weekly U.S. jobless claims have dropped to their lowest level in more than 50 years, even as the nation faces economic challenges from ongoing conflicts abroad. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, initial applications for unemployment benefits fell by 26,000 to 189,000 for the week ending Friday (April 25), far below the 214,000 new claims analysts had expected. This marks the lowest number of new filings since September 1969.

The four-week moving average, which helps smooth out fluctuations from week to week, dropped by 3,500 to 207,500. Continued claims for the week ending Friday (April 18) also decreased, falling by 23,000 to 1.785 million, the lowest level in two years. The insured unemployment rate remained steady at 1.2%.

Several states saw large decreases in claims, with New York, California, and Connecticut experiencing the biggest drops. Despite recent high-profile layoffs at companies like Meta Platforms, Nike, Morgan Stanley, and Amazon, the overall labor market remains stable. Jerome Powell, chair of the Federal Reserve, commented that the job market is showing “more and more signs of stability” after the central bank decided to keep interest rates unchanged this week.
