Jimmy Kimmel Pushes Back After Melania And Donald Trump Call For His Firing

Late-night host Jimmy Kimmel is defending his right to free speech after President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump called for his firing from ABC following a controversial joke. On Monday (April 27), Kimmel addressed the situation on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, referring to the White House statements and saying, “You know sometimes you wake up in the morning and the first lady puts out a statement demanding you be fired from your job? We’ve all been there, right?”

The renewed conflict began after Kimmel joked about Melania Trump during a faux-White House Correspondents’ Dinner sketch, saying she had “the glow of an expectant widow.” The first lady called Kimmel’s remarks “corrosive” and said they “deepen the political sickness within America” in a public statement on X. President Trump posted on Truth Social calling for Kimmel’s immediate dismissal, writing, “Jimmy Kimmel should be immediately fired by Disney and ABC.”

Kimmel had recently returned to the air after being suspended by ABC for comments he made regarding the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, a decision that sparked a national debate over free speech and censorship. The suspension followed pressure from Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chairman Brendan Carr, who urged local ABC affiliates to stop airing Kimmel’s show, citing the FCC’s regulatory authority.

During his emotional return, Kimmel clarified that it was never his intention to make light of Kirk’s murder and stated, “A government threat to silence a comedian the president doesn’t like is anti-American.” He thanked Disney for allowing him back on air, but some ABC affiliates, including Sinclair Broadcast Group and Nexstar Media Group, continue to withhold his show from their lineups.

The controversy has reignited discussions about the limits of free speech and the role of government in media oversight. Hundreds of celebrities and thousands of viewers have voiced support for Kimmel, while others have debated the appropriateness of his comments. As the situation unfolds, ABC and its affiliates face ongoing negotiations about whether ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’ will return to all markets. The show is currently set to continue through May 2027 under Kimmel’s latest contract extension.
