Man Accused Of Throwing Molotov Cocktail At OpenAI CEO’s Home Charged

A man accused of throwing a Molotov cocktail at the home of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and later attacking the company’s headquarters is officially facing multiple charges.

Daniel Moreno-Gama has been charged with attempted murder for his alleged plot against Altman, a second count of attempted murder for the security guard working Altman’s home at the time, and multiple counts related to arson and possession of a destructive device in connection with incidents at the home, which include two federal counts of damage and destruction of property by means of explosives and possession of an unregistered firearm, as well as OpenAI’s headquarters, San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins announced via ABC News. Moreno-Gama was reportedly caught on surveillance outside of Altman’s San Francisco home, according to federal court records.

The suspect faces 19 years to life in prison if convicted of the state charges, according to Jenkins.

“We are at the beginning of this investigation, but if the evidence shows that Mr. Moreno-Gama executed these attacks to change public policy or to coerce government or other officials, we will treat this as an act of domestic terrorism, and together with our partners, prosecute him to the fullest extent of the law,” said Craig Missakian, the U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of California, during the briefing via ABC News.

The alleged incident was reported to have taken place at 4:00 a.m. local time on Friday (April 10) when Moreno-Gama “threw an incendiary destructive device” at Altman’s home, which resulted in a fire at the exterior gate, according to the San Francisco Police Department. No injuries were reported in connection to the incident.

Moreno-Gama was arrested outside OpenAI’s headquarters about an hour later after allegedly threatening to burn the building down, according to police. Responding officers “immediately recognized him as the same individual from the earlier incident” at Altman’s residence, according to Luke Martin, the deputy chief of investigations for the San Francisco Police Department, during a press briefing Monday (April 14).
