Recalled Supplements Pose ‘Serious Injury Or Death’ Risk To Children

Vitaquest International, based in New Jersey, has voluntarily recalled about 356,140 bottles and packets of iron-containing dietary supplements due to a lack of child-resistant packaging. The recall, announced by the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) on Tuesday (April 9), affects supplements sold under several brand names including Arey, Bari Life, Bird&Be, Biote, Dr. Fuhrman, NuLife, HMR, Bariatric Pal, Noevir, Zenbean, and Sakara.

According to the CPSC, the recalled products do not meet the requirements of the Poison Prevention Packaging Act, which mandates child-resistant packaging for iron supplements. Without this protection, young children are at risk of serious injury or death if they accidentally swallow the contents.

The affected supplements include prenatal vitamins and a coffee alternative designed for children, among other products. As noted by the Consumer Product Safety Commission, iron poisoning can be extremely dangerous for children, with as few as ten tablets potentially causing fatal poisoning.

Vitaquest released a statement explaining that the recall is a precautionary measure: “The only issue is with the packaging, and specifically, that the packaging is not child-resistant. There are no issues with the product formulation, ingredient quality, or anything else.” The company added that there have been no reported injuries or incidents so far. More information on the recall and affected products can be found on the Vitaquest recall information page.

The recalled products were sold nationwide at retail stores such as Credo Beauty, Erewhon, Healf, Nutrition World, The Vitamin Shoppe, Fullscript, and Ulta Beauty, as well as online on Amazon and brand websites from April 2023 through February 2026. Prices ranged from $13 to $130.

Anyone who has purchased these supplements should immediately store them out of reach of children and contact Vitaquest for a free child-resistant replacement cap or storage pouch. Customers can reach Vitaquest by phone at 844-298-4545 or by email at productsafety@vitaquest.com.

Vitaquest and the CPSC urge consumers to review lot numbers and product details listed on the official recall notice to determine if their supplements are included. No timeline has been shared for when all replacement packaging will be distributed, but the company is working to resolve the issue as quickly as possible.
