California High-Speed Rail Cost Soars to $126 Billion

California’s ambitious high-speed rail project, intended to connect Los Angeles and San Francisco, now faces a staggering cost estimate of $126 billion.

This figure, revealed in a recent 60 Minutes report, far exceeds the initial $33 billion price tag presented to voters in 2008. Despite the significant investment, no tracks have been laid, and the project’s completion remains uncertain.

California High Speed Rail Authority board member Anthony Williams stated that the current estimate is about $126 billion. The project has been plagued by delays and cost overruns, leading to widespread criticism. State Transportation Secretary Toks Omishakin acknowledged that some criticisms are fair, admitting mistakes were made.

The high-speed rail project, initially championed by former Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and supported by his successor Jerry Brown, has faced numerous challenges, including stringent environmental regulations and high labor costs. As reported by 60 Minutes, these factors have contributed to the project’s soaring costs and delays.

Critics, such as Representative Vince Fong, have labeled the project a “complete bait and switch.” Fong emphasized the lack of detailed planning in the original 2008 proposal. The project, now focused on a more modest goal of connecting California’s Central Valley between Bakersfield and Merced, faces a $90 billion funding gap.

Governor Gavin Newsom has faced scrutiny over the project’s management, with some calling for its cancellation. Despite these challenges, state officials remain hopeful that additional funding can be secured to move the project forward. The earliest projected opening is now 2033, far later than originally promised.
