Cold Front Brings Late Season Snow To Cities In The Northeast

A sudden cold front swept across the Northeast on Monday (April 6), bringing winter back to major cities just days after near-record warmth. Residents from Upstate New York to Boston and Burlington, Vermont woke up to light snow as a fast-moving Alberta clipper system passed through the region.

Syracuse, New York saw snow accumulate early Monday morning, while other cities, including Albany, Buffalo, and even New York City, reported flurries or light dustings. Most regions could expect one to three inches of snow, with slightly higher totals possible in areas near the Great Lakes and higher terrain like the Adirondacks. The agency also noted that these areas typically see their last measurable snow by early to mid-April.

The return to wintry weather comes after a historically harsh winter season. Providence, Rhode Island recently broke its all-time snowstorm record with more than 37 inches falling during a single event, and communities across the Northeast have faced repeated heavy snowfalls.

In addition to snow, the cold front brought a sharp drop in temperatures. Highs on Monday (April 6) were expected to fall to the 40s and 50s, which is closer to seasonal averages but 10 to 20 degrees below the warmth felt just days before. The coldest day is expected to be Wednesday (April 8), when wind chills could remain in the 20s across interior parts of the Northeast.

Frost and freeze alerts have been issued in several states at the start of the growing season, with the approaching cold air expected to impact a wide area from the Great Lakes to New England through Wednesday (April 8). By Thursday, temperatures will begin to rebound and return to more typical spring levels.

This late-season cold snap underscores the unpredictable nature of this year’s weather, with the Northeast still feeling the effects of an intense winter even as spring advances.
