Cooler Weather, Rain Chance Ahead for Southland

LOS ANGELES (CNS) – Cooler temperatures will settle into Southern California Monday, marking the start of a broader cooling trend that could bring widespread rain to the region later this week, according to the National Weather Service.

The shift follows an unusually hot stretch in March and early April that saw record-breaking temperatures and elevated fire danger fueled by Santa Ana winds.

“Today and Tuesday will feel noticeably cooler for (the) coast and even some valleys as a weak upper trough induces an increase in onshore flow,” forecasters said.

Highs were expected to fall 3 to 6 degrees in many areas, with beach communities seeing declines of up to 10 degrees.

A brief warm-up is expected Wednesday, with temperatures rising several degrees and making it the warmest day of the week.

By Thursday, however, a stronger system is forecast to move into Southern California, ushering in a sustained cooling trend through the weekend, according to the weather agency.

Rain could begin as early as Thursday in Los Angeles County, and continue into Saturday or Sunday, forecasters said. Rain chances are high across the region, with at least an 80% likelihood.

Rainfall totals remain uncertain, but forecasts indicate many areas could receive around a half-inch of rain, with some models suggesting a roughly 30% chance of an inch or more.

There is also a slight chance of thunderstorms late in the week, along with gusty winds and possible heavier downpours in some areas.

Snow levels are expected to drop to around 7,000 to 9,000 feet, potentially bringing light accumulations to mountain areas, the NWS said.
