Accused Gilgo Beach Serial Killer To Change Plea To Guilty: Report

Rex Heuermann, the accused Gilgo Beach serial killer, is reportedly expected to change his plea to guilty in his upcoming court appearance, a source familiar with the case said, according to a report by Newsweek. Heuermann, a 62-year-old architect from Massapequa Park, had previously pleaded not guilty to the murder charges related to the deaths of seven women between 1993 and 2011.

The potential plea change comes as Heuermann’s trial is set to begin shortly after Labor Day, as noted by Judge Timothy Mazzei. Heuermann missed a pre-trial conference on March 17 due to unspecified medical reasons and is scheduled to return to court on April 8. He has been held without bail at Suffolk County jail in Riverhead since his arrest in July 2023. The charges include the murders of Megan Waterman, Maureen Brainard-Barnes, Amber Lynn Costello, Melissa Barthelemy, Valerie Mack, Jessica Taylor, and Sandra Costilla.

The case has drawn significant attention, with Heuermann’s defense team actively seeking to suppress certain evidence. This includes statements made by Heuermann during his arrest, as well as evidence seized from his home, office, cars, and a rented storage unit. The defense also challenges the DNA evidence, which was reportedly obtained from a discarded pizza crust found in a Manhattan garbage can.

Additionally, the defense is attempting to dismiss the murder charge related to Sandra Costilla’s 1993 death, arguing that the evidence linking Heuermann to the crime is insufficient. The Suffolk County district attorney’s office has until March to respond to these requests.
