More than 100,000 customers across North San Diego County and southern Orange County lost power Thursday (March 27) evening in a widespread outage that lasted roughly an hour and 15 minutes before San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) restored service to all affected customers.
The outage began at 7:41 p.m. and power was fully restored by 8:56 p.m., according to SDG&E. The cause of the outage has not yet been determined, and the utility says it is actively investigating.
Coastal communities hit by the outage included Carlsbad, Encinitas, La Costa, Cardiff-by-the-Sea, and Olivenhain. Inland areas such as Escondido, Del Dios, Lake Hodges, San Pasqual, Rancho Peñasquitos, and Rancho Bernardo also lost power, as did parts of Rancho Santa Fe and the San Elijo Lagoon region. The disruption reached as far north as southern Orange County, affecting Laguna Hills, Laguna Niguel, Mission Viejo, and the San Juan Capistrano area.
Following the full restoration of power, SDG&E Media Relations Manager Anthony Wagner released a statement addressing the disruption: “Power has been fully restored to customers affected by a widespread outage impacting multiple communities in North San Diego County and Orange County this evening. We understand how disruptive outages can be and are working to investigate the cause. The safety of our customers, employees, and communities remains our top priority.”
According to reporting on the outage, the scale of the disruption has raised broader questions about the long-term resilience of the region’s power grid infrastructure. SDG&E has not provided a timeline for when the cause of the outage will be determined or whether any updates will be shared with affected residents.
