NEWPORT BEACH (CNS) – Authorities will continue to monitor ocean conditions Friday after a shark sighting prompted a water closure at a Newport Beach shoreline.
Lifeguards were alerted about 1:15 p.m. Thursday to an approximately 8- foot great white shark circling a surfer near the beach at 35th Street, according to Georgia Rios, a spokeswoman for the city.
Officials initially planned a four-hour closure but later extended it until further notice, Rios said.
Beachgoers were still allowed on the sand, but access to the water remained restricted. Nearby lifeguard agencies were also notified of the sighting.
