US Pummeled By Snow, High Winds Raise Tornado Threat

Multiple regions of the United States were hit by varying severe weather on Monday (March 16) and Tuesday (March 17), ABC News reports.

Forecasters reported that the mid-Atlantic and Washington, D.C., were facing the greatest threat of high winds and tornadoes on Monday before the cold front was expected to move to the East Coast by Tuesday. Wind chills were expected to drop below freezing along the Gulf Coast and Florida Panhandle, while other parts of the Southeast, as well as Arkansas, Oklahoma, Louisiana and Texas, were facing freeze warnings.

Rain was also expected to turn into snow in the central Appalachians of West Virginia with accumulations exceeding 6 inches. The late winter blast follows a storm system that caused severe flooding in Hawaii over the weekend.

The National Weather Service warned that a line of severe storms with damaging winds would cross the majority of the Eastern region of the U.S. after already hitting the Mississippi, Tennessee and Ohio Valleys late Sunday (March 15). The path was expected to hit the Appalachians before moving to the East Coast, where forecasters expected “severe thunderstorms with widespread damaging winds and several tornadoes,” according to the National Weather Service.

Parts of South Carolina to Maryland appear to be the areas facing the greatest threats of damaging winds Monday afternoon.

“Whether it’s wind gusts from a squall line, blizzard or snow, or just wind because of the storm, you’re looking at several major airports being impacted,“ AccuWeather senior meteorologist Tyler Roys said via ABC News.
