The Cuban Ministry issued a statement Wednesday (February 25) night claiming that the four people killed and six others injured during a “confrontation” involving a speedboat registered in the United States had opened fire on Cuban troops and attempted an “infiltration” via ABC News.
The government agency said the 10 individuals were “Cuban residents of the United States” armed with weapons and “intended to carry out an infiltration for terrorist purposes.” The U.S. government hasn’t yet issued a public statement with details about the incident.
The six individuals who survived during the incident have all been detained, the Cuban Ministry confirmed, adding that most of the people aboard the vessel “have a known history of criminal and violent activity.” Cuban officials also confirmed that another man described as “a citizen sent from the United States to facilitate the reception of the armed infiltration” was arrested.
The incident took place Wednesday (February 26) morning, the agency had confirmed in a previous statement. Border Guard troops detected the boat in Cuban waters and approached it for identification, at which point the individuals on board “opened fire,” which resulted in the commander of the Cuban vessel sustaining injuries. Assault rifles, handguns, Molotov cocktails, bulletproof vests, telescopic sights and camouflage uniforms were all seized by authorities after the incident took place.
The Cuban Ministry said the Florida-registered speedboat approached Cayo Falcones in the Villa Clara province about 1 nautical mile northeast of the El Pino Chanel Wednesday morning.
“In the face of current challenges, Cuba reaffirms its determination to protect its territorial waters, based on the principle that national defense is a fundamental pillar of the Cuban State in safeguarding its sovereignty and ensuring stability in the region,” the Cuban Ministry of the Interior said via ABC News.
