Man Fatally Shoots 2 Deputies, Injures 2 More During Multiple Incidents

A suspect is accused of opening fire and killing two deputies during multiple incidents in Missouri, ABC News reports.

Richard Bird, 45, initially opened fire on deputies at a traffic stop, killing one before escaping, according to the Stone County Sheriff’s Office. Bird was later tracked to a wooded area nearby, at which point he opened fire on police again, which resulted in one additional death and two injuries, according to Christian County Sheriff Brad Cole.

Bird once again fled the scene and abandoned the pickup truck he was traveling in. The Missouri Highway Patrol issued a Blue Alert which included a photo of the vehicle prior to locating a heat source in the woods, which was identified as Bird, according to Cole.

“The suspect, once deputies were close to him, immediately opened fire on the deputies and three deputies were shot during that time. We have one deputy from Christian County who is deceased from this incident,” Cole said during a press conference via ABC News.

The two deputies reported to be injured during the second shooting were reported to be from the Christian County and Webster County Sheriff’s Offices and their injuries are not believed to be life-threatening, according to Cole. Bird continued firing rounds at deputies until he was fatally shot himself by returning fire, Cole confirmed during the press conference.
