An estimated 41 million people are currently facing blizzard warnings ahead of a bomb cyclone set to hit the Northeast, NBC News reports.
States in the Northeast spanning from Maryland to Maine are expected to see the worst conditions late Sunday (February 22) night with Rhode Island, Pennsylvania and Connecticut having already declared states of emergency, which includes commercial vehicle bands and travel restrictions set to begin as early as 5:00 p.m. ET. New York City is set to have a travel ban begin at 9:00 pm. ET, with officials warning that the city could see one of its 10 worst storms in the last 150 years.
Satellite images from the Cooperative Institute for Research in the Atmosphere showed the storm moving across the region, offering a preview of the blizzard.
“A blockbuster winter storm takes shape in the Northeast,” the Cooperative Institute of Research wrote in its post on X.
Highest impacts are expected to take place late Sunday night and into Monday (February 22), with an expected 50 to 70 MPH wind gusts and snowfall rates of 2 to 4 inches per hour possible in coastal regions, while storms could continue into Tuesday (February 24) morning. The combination is expected to result in blinding conditions with visibility issues with clearing expected to take place during the afternoon and evening.
