Armed Man Shot and Killed After Entering Secure Perimeter at Mar-a-Lago

An armed man was shot and killed early Sunday after unlawfully entering the secure perimeter at Mar-a-Lago, according to the U.S. Secret Service.

Authorities say the incident happened around 1:30 a.m., when a White man in his early 20s entered the property. Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw said at a news conference that the man appeared to be carrying a shotgun and a fuel can.

When a sheriff’s deputy and two Secret Service agents confronted him, they ordered him to drop the items. The man dropped the gas can but raised the shotgun into a shooting position, Bradshaw said. The deputy and agents then opened fire. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

The president and first lady were at the White House in Washington, D.C., at the time of the incident.

No law enforcement officers were injured. Officials said the officers involved were wearing body cameras.

The FBI is leading the investigation, collecting evidence and examining the man’s background and possible motive. His identity is being withheld pending notification of his family.

The Secret Service said the agents involved will be placed on administrative leave in accordance with agency policy. Authorities are also asking nearby residents to review exterior security footage and report any suspicious activity.
