New Poll Shows How Americans View Tactics Used By ICE

A new ABC News/Washington Post/Ipsos poll shows that American voters oppose tactics used by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents by wide margins.

A growing share is reported to oppose expanded ICE operations by a 2-to-1 margin, while respondents are split on immigration and deportation policies. Half (50%) of Americans support the federal government deporting the estimated 14 million undocumented immigrants living in the United States while 48% oppose these measures.

That number has, however, dropped from the reported 56% of Americans who supposed deportation of undocumented immigrants when President Donald Trump was elected in 2024 and the 51% reported last February. A majority 58% also said Trump was going “too far” with deportations of undocumented immigrants, which was an increase from the 50% reported in October.

Only 12% of respondents claimed the president was “not going far enough” and 28% said he is “handling it about right.” The opposition to Trump and ICE’s tactics followed backlash from the fatal shootings of American citizens Reneé Good and Alex Pretti, which took place 17 days apart in Minneapolis amid Operation Metro Surge, the monthslong immigration enforcement in Minnesota, which border czar Tom Homan announced had concluded earlier this month.

The announcement followed Homan’s previous announcement that the Trump administration would pull 700 U.S. Immigration and Customs officers from Minneapolis, decreasing Operation Metro Surge by nearly 20%, earlier this month. Trump had previously said he intended to “de-escalate a little bit” in Minneapolis after the outrage over the shooting deaths of Good and Pretti, both of whom were U.S. citizens engaging in protests at the time of their deaths.
