Major Nor’easter Could Dump Heavy Snow Across The Northeast This Weekend

A potentially powerful nor’easter is brewing that could bring significant snowfall to millions along the Interstate 95 corridor from Sunday night into Monday, according to forecasters tracking the developing system.

The Philadelphia, New York City, and Boston metropolitan areas are all within the storm’s potential path, though meteorologists emphasize that considerable uncertainty remains about the storm’s exact track and intensity.

The system currently moving along the coast of British Columbia in Canada is expected to eject into the Lower 48 Thursday night as part of a series of storms moving out of the West this week. As it reaches the East Coast, forecasters believe it could track offshore and potentially develop into a powerful coastal storm by Sunday.

Both traditional computer and AI forecast models indicate a coastal system will develop, but there’s no consensus on its location or strength. Several AI models are signaling a powerful snow event for Sunday night into Monday, particularly concerning for a region where many cities still have snow on the ground from January’s historic winter storm.

The National Weather Service currently forecasts a 50% chance of snow for New York City on Sunday and Sunday night, with precipitation possibly beginning as rain late Saturday before transitioning to snow as colder air moves in. WNYW meteorologist Liv Johnson explained that the storm’s impact depends heavily on the coastal low’s position: “If this low moves closer, that increases our chance of seeing some snowfall. If it stays further offshore… then our chances decrease.”

For a major snowstorm to materialize, several factors would need to align perfectly – specifically a slow and precise track along the northeast coast combined with sufficient cold air from Canada. The biggest uncertainties remain how quickly the storm will strengthen as it moves through the Great Lakes and exactly where it will emerge off the East Coast.

Forecasters expect the prediction to become clearer as the weekend approaches, with residents across the Northeast advised to stay informed about this developing weather situation.
