Two skiers were killed and another person was injured after an off-trail avalanche on the Italian side of the Mont Blanc massif, which is located between the France and Switzerland border, officials announced on Sunday (February 15) via ABC News.
At least three skiers were caught up in the Couloir Vesses, a popular freeride route in Courmayeur, in the upper Val Veny after the avalanche occurred, Italy’s Alpine Rescue confirmed. One victim was transported to a hospital in serious condition before later being pronounced dead.
Fifteen rescuers, three canine units and two helicopters participated in search and rescue efforts at the scene. Another individual was found partially buried but was rescued by companions at the scene, according to authorities.
Courmayeur is located about 124 miles northwest of Milan where the 2026 Winter Olympics are currently taking place. Thirteen backcountry skiers, climbers and hikers died in a weeklong span ending on February 8, which included 10 avalanches being triggered, the Alpine Rescue announced last Monday (February 8).
Storms and wind-swept snow caps were brought on by fresh snowfall on weak internal layers leading to risky conditions along the Alpine crescent bordering France, Switzerland and Austria, according to Alpine Rescue with several ski resorts have faced closures due to avalanche dangers.
