Dispute Over Stolen Wallet Led To Possible Bombing At Apartment Building

Authorities in Connecticut are investigating an explosion at an apartment building that resulted in the evacuation of 150 people from the surrounding area.

Bridgeport Police Chief Roderick Porter said that a fire broke out on the third floor of an apartment building just before 12:30 a.m. When officers and firefighters responded, they put out the flames and determined that the fire was likely caused by “some type of explosive device.”

Nobody was injured in the explosion.

About 150 people were evacuated from the immediate area as officers combed the building for other potential devices.

“We do have a person of interest who we’re speaking to at this time who possibly may be responsible for this,” Porter said.

Two sources with the investigation told WVIT that the bombing stemmed from a dispute between two people over a stolen wallet. They believe that one of those people placed the small explosive device on the third floor of the apartment building and detonated it.

“It appears to be an isolated incident,” FBI New Haven Public Affairs Specialist Charles Grady told CNN. “There is no longer a threat to the community relative to this incident, and the investigation will continue.”
