A Colorado man faces multiple charges after admitting to police that his three children were hiding in the trunk of his car during a DUI traffic stop in Westminster, according to recently released body camera footage.
The incident occurred on Thursday (January 23) when an officer spotted a vehicle “driving recklessly” near City Center Drive and 93rd Avenue in Westminster, according to the Westminster Police Department.
Body camera footage shows the officer approaching the driver and immediately detecting the smell of alcohol. When questioned, the driver initially denied consuming any alcohol and agreed to perform field sobriety tests before changing his mind.
After being placed under arrest, the man made a shocking admission to officers.
“You have three kids hiding in the trunk?” an officer can be heard asking in the video. When officers opened the trunk, they discovered three children lying inside.
Police also found several bottles of alcohol in the vehicle, further compounding the seriousness of the situation.
The driver, whose identity has not been released by authorities, was transported to Adams County Jail. He faces multiple charges including driving under the influence, reckless driving, and child abuse.
Child Protective Services was contacted following the incident, and the children were released to another family member.
