Popular Costco Item Recalled Over Potential Life-Threatening Allergen

Costco has recalled a popular bakery item due to a potentially life-threatening allergen, the company announced in a letter to members.

The Mini Beignets sold between January 16 and January 30 were labeled as being caramel-filled, but instead contained chocolate hazelnut filling, therefore not adhering to the correct allergen warning for tree nuts required by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The recalled Mini Beignets were sold at Costco warehouses in 22 states including Alabama, Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Louisiana, Michigan, Missouri, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, and Washington.

The recalled items can be identified by their “Mini Beignets Filled with Caramel” label, as well as the item number 1181272 sold between January 16 and January 30. Any consumer with tree nut allergies is advised not to eat the recalled items as they could trigger a serious or life-threatening reaction and should, instead return the items to Costco for a full refund.

Shoppers who don’t have a tree nut allergy don’t need to respond to the recall as the items are otherwise safe to consume, though consumers without a tree nut allergy are also entitled to a full refund if they have Mini Beignets actually filled with Chocolate Hazelnut instead of caramel they intended to purchase. Additional questions can be answered by contacting Costco’s customer service.
