Carlos Alcaraz Becomes Youngest Man To Complete Career Grand Slam

Spanish tennis star Carlos Alcaraz defeated Serbia’s Novak Djokovic in the Australian Open Final to become the youngest man to complete the career Grand Slam on Sunday (February 1).

Alcaraz, 22, the current ATP No. 1 overall player in the world, rallied back from a first set loss to win 2-6, 6-2, 6-3, 7-5, for his seventh career major title. The Spaniard dropped his racket and fell to the ground on his back with his hands to his head after securing the victory, staying on the court for a few seconds before going over to Djokovic to shake hands, with the all-time men’s Grand Slam record holder congratulating him.

Both players came off five-set semifinal victories to clinch the Australian Open Final and neither relented on big points, with Alcaraz converting five of the 16 breakpoints he set up and Djokovic converting two of his six. Djokovic once again fell short of securing his 25th career Grand Slam singles title, having been blocked by either Alcaraz or Jannik Sinner, who he defeated in the semifinals, in the past nine major tournaments.

Djokovic aimed to become the oldest man to win a Grand Slam singles title in the Open Era, but was instead on the opposite side of history as Alcaraz set the mark for the youngest career Grand Slam champion at 22 years and 272 days. The previous record was set by Don Budge, who was 22 years and 363 days, when he won the 1938 French Open.
