Man Allegedly Posed As FBI Agent To Try To Free Luigi Mangione From Jail

A Minnesota man, identified as Mark Anderson, was arrested late Wednesday (January 28) after allegedly pretending to be an FBI agent in an attempt to free accused killer Luigi Mangione from the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, New York City. Anderson, age 35, arrived at the federal jail claiming he had a court order to release Mangione, who is awaiting trial in the high-profile killing of UnitedHealthCare CEO Brian Thompson.

Anderson presented a Minnesota driver’s license when asked for FBI credentials and showed officers various unrelated documents, including a form on how to sue the Department of Justice. When confronted by jail staff, Anderson declared that he had weapons in his backpack. Officers searched the bag and found a barbecue fork and a pizza cutter, but no firearms.

Federal prosecutors in Brooklyn have charged Anderson with impersonating an FBI agent. Anderson’s criminal history includes previous arrests for petit larceny and menacing in the Bronx.

Mangione, the intended inmate in the alleged jailbreak attempt, remains in custody at the Metropolitan Detention Center. He is awaiting both federal and state trials related to the December 2024 killing of Brian Thompson. Jury selection for the federal case is scheduled to begin in September, with possible testimony starting in October or January 2027, depending on judicial rulings about the death penalty.
