JD Vance Agrees To Debate Tim Walz On October 1 In New York City

Ohio Senator JD Vance has agreed to debate Minnesota Governor Tim Walz on October 1 on CBS, marking a significant event in the 2024 vice presidential race. The agreement ensures at least one vice presidential debate this election cycle, following months of uncertainty.

Walz had publicly agreed to the October debate in CBS’s New York City studios earlier this week. The commitments from both candidates cap off months of back-and-forth that began when Vice President Kamala Harris was still President Joe Biden’s running mate. In May, Harris pledged to debate former President Donald Trump’s eventual vice presidential pick in either July or August. However, Vance declined to debate her after joining Trump’s ticket this summer, asserting that he did not know who the true Democratic running mate would be given Biden’s teetering campaign.

Vance also said that he had agreed to debate Walz on CNN on September 18. The network confirmed in a statement that it had invited both Walz and Vance to a debate, and Vance has accepted. If Walz agrees to CNN’s proposal, this would appear to be the first time that the vice presidential nominees debate more than once during a presidential election.

“The American people deserve as many debates as possible, which is why President Trump has challenged Kamala to three of them already. Not only do I accept the CBS debate on October 1st, I accept the CNN debate on September 18th as well. I look forward to seeing you at both!” Vance wrote on X in response to a message from Walz.
