IRS Launches Free Tax Tool For Many Filers As Tax Season Gets Underway

The 2026 tax filing season officially opened on Monday (January 26), with the Internal Revenue Service now accepting tax returns for the 2025 tax year. Taxpayers have until April 15 to file their returns or request an extension.

This year, the IRS has expanded its Free File program, making it available to more Americans. Taxpayers with an adjusted gross income (AGI) of $89,000 or less in 2025 can use IRS Free File Guided Tax Software at no cost. This represents an increase from the previous year’s threshold of $84,000.

Eight private-sector partners are offering guided tax software products through the program this year. Each partner sets its own eligibility requirements based on factors such as age, income, state residency, and military status.

For taxpayers with incomes above the $89,000 threshold, Free File Fillable Forms became available on January 26. These electronic versions of IRS paper forms are designed for individuals comfortable preparing their own taxes using IRS instructions.

The IRS Free File program began accepting returns on January 9, giving taxpayers an early opportunity to prepare their returns before the official filing season started. The program works on computers, smartphones, and tablets, making it accessible to most taxpayers.

Those requesting an extension will have until October 15 to file their returns, though any taxes owed must still be paid by the April 15 deadline to avoid penalties.

To use the Free File system, taxpayers need to gather essential documentation including Social Security numbers, W-2 forms, 1099 forms, and information about other income and deductions.
