Justice Department Subpoenas Top Minnesota Officials Over ICE Obstruction

The Justice Department has issued subpoenas to Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, and other state officials as part of an investigation into potential obstruction of federal immigration enforcement. The subpoenas, which seek records, were also sent to Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison, St. Paul Mayor Kaohly Her, and officials in Ramsey and Hennepin counties.

The investigation focuses on whether these officials obstructed federal law enforcement during immigration operations under the Trump administration. Governor Walz and Mayor Frey have criticized the probe, describing it as a political tactic to suppress dissent. Frey stated, “We shouldn’t have to live in a country where people fear that federal law enforcement will be used to play politics or crack down on local voices they disagree with.”

The subpoenas come amid heightened tensions following the fatal shooting of Renee Good by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer in Minneapolis earlier this month. The incident has sparked protests and increased scrutiny of federal immigration operations in the area. President Donald Trump expressed his condolences for Good’s death, calling it a tragedy, but defended ICE operations, stating that mistakes can occur during enforcement efforts.

The Trump administration has urged a judge to dismiss Minnesota’s attempts to halt the immigration crackdown, arguing that federal law takes precedence over state law. Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison has accused the federal government of violating constitutional rights with its enforcement actions. The outcome of the investigation and related legal proceedings remains to be seen.
