4.9 Quake Strikes Near Indio

A magnitude 4.9 earthquake struck near Indio Hills on Monday evening, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

The quake, centered approximately five miles north-northeast of Indio Hills, occurred just before 6 p.m. at a depth of nearly two miles. The tremor was felt across the region, with reports coming in from as far as San Diego, 92 miles away from the epicenter.

The earthquake was followed by several aftershocks, with magnitudes of 3.3, 3.4, and 2.9, according to Patch.com. The quake had an estimated intensity of V on the modified Mercalli intensity scale, indicating moderate shaking that could overturn unstable objects and break windows.

Despite the widespread shaking, a spokesperson for the Riverside County Fire Department reported no immediate damage. Residents in Joshua Tree described the sensation as “swaying like a boat,” while those in north San Diego County noted rumbling lasting about 15 seconds.

The earthquake occurred 14.5 miles north of Coachella and 16.6 miles northeast of Palm Springs. In the past 10 days, there have been four other earthquakes of magnitude 3.0 or greater in the area. On average, California and Nevada experience 25 earthquakes with magnitudes between 4.0 and 5.0 each year.
