100 Vehicles Pile Up Amid US Snowstorm

More than 100 vehicles were involved in a pile up on a Michigan highway as snow storms moved across the United States on Monday (January 19), ABC News reports.

The accident took place on Interstate 196 and led to both directions being closed as officials tried to remove all vehicles, including more than 30 semitrailer trucks. Numerous injuries were reported, but no deaths, the Michigan State Police Department confirmed.

The pile up was the latest impact of a major winter system that has moved across the United States over the weekend, with the National Weather Service issuing warnings for extremely cold temperatures and potential winter storms in several states spanning from the Midwest to the Northeast including Minnesota, Wisconsin, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania and New York. On Sunday (January 18), snow was reported to have fallen as south as the Florida Panhandle and was a factor in the AFC Divisional Round game between the Houston Texans and New England Patriots in Foxborough, Massachusetts, and the NFC Divisional Round game between the Los Angeles Rams and Chicago Bears in Chicago.

Forecasters warned that freezing temperatures were possible in north-central Florida and southeast Georgia overnight and into the morning on Tuesday (January 20), ABC News reports.
