Howie Mandel is still chasing laughs and the next big star.
The legendary comedian and longtime America’s Got Talent judge sat down with KFI’s Heather Brooker to talk comedy, courage, and why he believes the next season of AGT could be a turning point, especially for stand-ups.
Mandel is hosting America’s Got Talent: The Comedy Showcase, a one-night-only event set for February 2nd at the world-famous Laugh Factory. The showcase gives up-and-coming comedians a rare shot to perform in front of Mandel himself, and possibly earn a place on AGT’s upcoming season.
“AGT has launched some incredible comedians,” Mandel told Brooker, pointing to alumni like Preacher Lawson and Taylor Williamson. “But a comedian has never won. That could finally change this season.”
The event is open to the public to watch and promises a high-energy lineup of comics hoping to break through on one of television’s biggest stages. Comics can also sign up to audition through AGT’s official portal, making the showcase both a dream opportunity and a pressure-packed night.
Mandel says being on AGT is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for comedians.
“There isn’t a place where any performer can show up and get this kind of exposure.”
Beyond AGT, Mandel also talked about his podcast Howie Mandel Does Stuff, which he hosts with his daughter Jackelyn Shultz. He says he enjoys the freedom it gives him to be more candid and talk to people from all walks of life.
And he opens up about how comedy continues to evolve in the age of viral clips and instant feedback.
A portion of this interview first aired on KFI’s Wake Up Call. You can listen to the full conversation with Heather and Howie on Entertain Me with Heather Brooker.
