These cases challenge state laws that prevent transgender girls from joining female sports teams.
In West Virginia, Becky Pepper-Jackson, a 15-year-old transgender student, challenged a 2021 state law that barred her from participating in track. A federal court had blocked this ban, but the state appealed to the Supreme Court. In Idaho, Lindsay Hecox, a transgender college student, initially sued to overturn the state’s 2020 law prohibiting transgender women and girls from women’s sports teams. Although Hecox has since stopped participating in college sports and sought to dismiss her case, the court is still hearing it.
Twenty-seven states have enacted similar laws, arguing that they ensure fairness and safety in women’s sports. However, advocates for transgender rights argue that these laws are discriminatory and lack credible evidence of harm to cisgender female athletes.
The court’s decision could have significant implications for civil rights, potentially affecting laws in other states. The Trump administration supports the state bans, arguing that they uphold fairness in sports based on biological differences.
