EPA to Test Soil at 100 Properties in Eaton Fire Area

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is set to test the soil at 100 properties affected by the Eaton Fire burn scar.

This decision comes after residents, like Carolina Chacon, expressed concerns about rebuilding on potentially contaminated land. Chacon, who lost her home in the fire, discovered ash and fire debris under her property after the Army Corps of Engineers cleared the top six inches of soil.

Chacon described finding remnants of her home, including pottery and bricks, mixed with the debris. “After the first big rain storm in October, we developed a sinkhole under where our garage was,” she said, highlighting the ongoing challenges faced by homeowners in the area.

The EPA’s testing aims to assess the extent of contamination and ensure that rebuilding efforts can proceed safely. This initiative is part of a broader effort to address environmental and health concerns in regions affected by wildfires. The results of these tests will guide future cleanup and rebuilding strategies, providing residents with the necessary information to move forward confidently.
