Saugus Cafe in Santa Clarita to Close After 139 Years

After nearly 140 years of serving the Santa Clarita community, The Original Saugus Café, one of the oldest restaurants in Los Angeles County, is closing its doors.

The iconic diner, which has been a staple for generations, will serve its last meal on January 4.

The café announced its closure on Monday through a heartfelt Facebook post, expressing gratitude to its loyal customers. “For 139 years, Saugus Café has been more than just a restaurant,” the post read. “It has been a place where memories were made, stories were shared, and generations came together.”

On Tuesday, the café was bustling with patrons eager to enjoy one last meal at the beloved establishment. Many customers, like Jamie Santellano, shared emotional stories about their connections to the café. “It’s emotional because it’s been here for so long. My family has come here for breakfast, and we brought my mom here,” Santellano said.

Jessie Ponce, whose father, Alfredo, owns and cooks at the café, expressed gratitude to their clientele. “It warms my heart because I see people in the morning literally crying, saying, ‘It’s my last meal here,'” Ponce said.

While the reason for the closure was not disclosed, the future of the building remains uncertain. The café’s closure marks the end of an era for the Santa Clarita community, leaving behind cherished memories for its patrons.
