In January 2025, Victoria Nodiff-Netanel, founder of Mini Therapy Horses, watched as flames from the Palisades fire crested a ridge near her Calabasas home. Forced to evacuate with her nine mini-horses and eight dogs, she quickly mobilized her animals to offer comfort to those affected by the wildfire. Within a week, Nodiff-Netanel and her mini-horses visited fire recovery areas, fire stations, and makeshift emergency bases, providing much-needed emotional support. “Because of all the fires and heartache going on, we have been requested an awful lot for comfort and support,” she said.
The fire occurred shortly after her nonprofit participated in the 2025 Rose Parade. Now, as the year ends, Nodiff-Netanel reflects on the challenges faced by Los Angeles County and looks forward to the 2026 Rose Parade, hoping it marks the beginning of a less devastating year. The parade’s theme, “Magic in Teamwork,” highlights the collaboration between Mini Therapy Horses and the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) throughout 2025. The horses, along with two LAFD captains and a therapy dog, will participate in the parade to celebrate their joint efforts in providing emotional support.
According to Pasadena Star News, the mini horses have been a source of joy for firefighters and community members alike. LAFD Captain Adam VanGerpen noted, “The horses would come into base camps, and you’d see as soon as the horses walked in, everyone started coming out of their trailers or tents just to see them.” The horses even visited tents where first responders, including FEMA personnel, were stationed.
Mini Therapy Horses, founded in 2008, is known for its work in equine-assisted activities and therapy. They regularly visit hospitals and other facilities to bring comfort and happiness to those in need. The organization has participated in several Rose Parades and has been featured in various media outlets. Nodiff-Netanel hopes the upcoming parade will symbolize resilience and the power of teamwork in rebuilding the community.
