A tragic mass shooting occurred at a child’s birthday party in Stockton, on Saturday, leaving four people dead, including three children. The San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office reported that the victims were aged 8, 9, 14, and 21. Eleven others, including a 9-year-old, were injured during the incident, which took place inside a strip mall shopping center’s banquet hall.
The shooting happened around 6 p.m. and involved up to 150 partygoers. According to officials, it may have been a targeted attack, though no suspects have been identified or arrested yet. Heather Brent from the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office stated, “Our No. 1 priority right now is identifying the suspect in this incident.”
Several victims were treated at local hospitals, including Dignity Health St. Joseph’s Medical Center and Sutter Memorial Hospital in Modesto. The community has been urged to provide any information that could assist in the investigation.
Stockton Mayor Christina Fugazi expressed her sorrow, noting the tragedy’s timing shortly after Thanksgiving. “Families should be together instead of at the hospital standing next to their loved one praying that they survive,” she said. A vigil organized by Faith in the Valley was held on Sunday to honor the victims.
Authorities continue to investigate the motive behind the shooting and are seeking help from the public to identify the suspect or suspects involved. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office.
