New Footage Shows National Guardsman Open Fire On Shooting Suspect

New footage shows a National Guard member opening fire on Rahmanullah Lakanwal, the Afghan national suspected of ambushing and shooting two other troops in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday (November 26).

Lakanwal, accused in the shooting that killed US. Army Specialist Sarah Beckstrom and left U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe in critical condition, was seen wielding his gun as he fired rounds before a male guard was seen frantically running down the street and frantically attempting to reload his own weapon in live photos obtained by the Wall Street Journal. The photos, which were captured by a witness, also showed the two victims slumped over in the street.

Investigators had already reviewed the footage prior to it being released by the Wall Street Journal. Police confirmed that one National Guard members exchanged gunfire with the shooter during the incident, at which point the suspect was pinned down and detained.

Lakanwal, who was treated for non-life-threatening wounds, initially faced charges of assault with intent to kill while armed and possession of a firearm, but will have charges upgraded to first-degree murder following Beckstrom’s death, U.S. Attorney for D.C. Jeanine Pirro announced on Friday.

“What happened at that crime is unmistakable. It is a premeditated murder. There was an ambush with a gun toward people who didn’t know it was coming,” Pirro said on FOX & Friends. “This is a case that has touched the hearts of so many Americans … to be gunned down on the streets on the nation’s holiday is an outrage — and the individual who did this will pay the ultimate price.”
