Date Set For House Vote To End Record US Government Shutdown

A vote on the proposal to end the longest government shutdown in U.S. history will take place “as early as 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday,” House Republican leaders announced on Tuesday (November 11) via the New York Post.

Speaker Mike Johnson told lawmakers to return to Washington, D.C. immediately to avoid travel issues as flights have been canceled or delayed nationwide due to the lack of airport staff caused by the shutdown. The House of Representatives hasn’t voted on legislation since September 19, when it narrowly approved a measure that would have funded the government through November 21, which was blocked 14 times by Senate Democrats prior to eight agreeing to advance revised legislation on Sunday (November 9).

The spending bill, which funds the government through January 30, 2026, while providing money for SNAP benefits, veteran programs and congressional operations through September 30, 2026, was approved by the Senate Monday (November 10) night, with Sens. Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), Maggie Hassan (D-NH), Tim Kaine (D-Va.), Jacky Rosen (D-Nev.), Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.), John Fetterman (D-Pa.), Angus King (I-Maine) and Minority Whip Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) voting alongside 52 Republicans. The bill is expected to be approved by the Republican-majority House before being sent to President Donald Trump to be signed into law, effectively ending the longest-ever government shutdown at 43 days.
