Six Flags America in Bowie, Maryland, officially closed its gates on Sunday (November 2) after 50 years in operation.
“Thank you, Six Flags America fans, for 50 years of family fun. We will always cherish the memories made together,” the theme park wrote on its Instagram account.
Six Flags America, which operated alongside the Hurricane Harbor water park, included more than 100 rides, shows, slides and rollercoasters. The theme park had previously announced plans to close permanently at the end of the 2025 season as part of the company’s ongoing efforts to restructure amid debt issues.
“As part of our comprehensive review of our park portfolio, we have determined that Six Flags America and Hurricane Harbor are not a strategic fit with the company’s long-term growth plans,” current president and CEO Richard A. Zimmerman said in a press release shared in May.
“After reviewing a number of options, we believe that marketing the property for redevelopment will generate the highest value and return on investment,” he added.
Six Flags later announced plans to close its Great America park in Santa Clara at the end of 2027, prior to the conclusion of its lease in 2028.
“Those are two parks that are very low on the ranking of margins,” said chief financial officer Brian Witherow via PEOPLE while answering questions at Six Flags Investor Day 2025 on May 20.
