Trump Claims ‘Unquestioned Power’ to Deploy Troops to San Francisco

President Donald Trump stated on Sunday that he has the “unquestioned power” to deploy the National Guard to San Francisco under the Insurrection Act. In an interview on Fox News’ “Sunday Morning Futures,” Trump expressed his intention to send federal forces to the city, citing a need for intervention due to perceived safety issues. He remarked, “San Francisco was truly one of the great cities of the world. And then, 15 years ago, it went wrong. It went woke.”

Trump has already deployed the National Guard to cities like Los Angeles, Memphis, Chicago, and Washington, D.C., but these actions have faced legal challenges. The Insurrection Act, which allows for military deployment on U.S. soil, has only been invoked by about one-fourth of presidents, contrary to Trump’s claim that nearly half have used it.

California officials, including Governor Gavin Newsom, quickly criticized Trump’s remarks. Newsom stated on social media, “Nobody wants you here. You will ruin one of America’s greatest cities.” San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie highlighted the city’s progress in reducing crime and strengthening its police force. The San Francisco Chronicle reported that crime rates have continued to fall, with the city on track to have the lowest number of homicides in over 70 years.

Despite these local efforts, Trump insists that federal intervention is necessary. His comments come amid broader tensions between his administration and Democratic-led cities. Yahoo News noted that Trump has paused $11 billion in infrastructure projects in cities like San Francisco, New York, and Baltimore, a move some critics see as political retaliation.

The legal battle over Trump’s authority to deploy troops continues, with a federal judge recently blocking his attempt to send the National Guard to Chicago. The White House has appealed this decision to the Supreme Court.
