Multiple Victims In Shooting, Fire At Church

An estimated six to eight victims were reported in a mass shooting at a Church of Latter Day Saints in Grand Blanc Township, Michigan, which was reported to be “actively on fire” when authorities arrived at the scene on Sunday (September 28), FOX 2 Detroit reports.

“There’s has been an active shooter at the church of Latter Day Saints on McCandlish Rd. There are multiple victims and the shooter is down. There is NO threat to the public at this time,” the Grand Blanc Township Police Department said in a Facebook post. “The church is actively on fire.”

A video taken near the scene showed a large plume of black smoke rising from the church, NBC News reports. Genesee County Sheriff Christopher Swanson said “the entire church is on fire,” but all parishioners were evacuated and the scene is no longer a threat.

“Just know that there’s a lot of things that are happening that we are not able to communicate just because of the work that needs to be done,” Swanson said via NBC News.

Attorney General Pam Bondi confirmed that the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) were responding to the scene.

“Such violence at a place of worship is heartbreaking and chilling,” Bondi said in a statement obtained by NBC News.

People at the site were directed to a reunification pavilion, while offsite reunification would be held at the Trillium theater at Holly and McCandish.
