Hegseth Calls Hundreds Of Military Commanders To Virginia For Meeting

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has ordered hundreds of top U.S. military commanders to gather at a Marine Corps base in Quantico, Virginia, next week. The meeting, set for Tuesday (September 30), has sparked curiosity and speculation, as the Pentagon has not disclosed its purpose. President Donald Trump described the gathering as a “kumbaya moment,” while some defense officials expressed concerns about the logistical challenges and security implications of assembling so many high-ranking officers in one location.

The meeting will bring together generals and admirals of one-star rank or higher, along with senior advisers. President Trump contradicted Vice President JD Vance‘s remarks on the significance of the meeting, with Trump calling it a “big story” and Vance downplaying its importance. The meeting coincides with a potential government shutdown if Congress fails to reach a funding agreement.

Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell confirmed that Hegseth will address his senior military leaders but did not provide further details. The meeting follows recent changes within the Department of Defense, including a rebranding to the Department of War and a reduction in the number of top military positions. The Pentagon is also working on a new defense strategy, which is expected to shift focus from deterring China to addressing issues within the Western Hemisphere and the United States.
