Ontario Airport Sees Growth in Passengers and Cargo in August

Ontario International Airport continues its growth streak, reporting increases in both passenger and cargo volumes for August. The airport announced on Thursday that it has seen year-over-year growth for 54 consecutive months in passenger traffic and 14 months in air cargo. In August, the airport served 646,820 passengers, marking a 0.5% increase from the same month last year. This total included 592,870 domestic travelers and 53,950 international passengers.

International travel at Ontario International Airport surged by 53.7% compared to the previous year. This increase was fueled by new routes to Mexico and Taiwan introduced earlier this summer. In June, Starlux Airlines from Taiwan launched direct flights between Ontario and Taipei, setting a new record for international travelers. In July, Volaris, a Mexican ultra-low-cost carrier, began 14 new weekly flights between San Bernardino County and three destinations in Mexico, including daily service to Los Cabos.

From January through August, the airport served over 4.6 million travelers, a 1% rise compared to the same period in 2024. International traffic rose 14.2% to nearly 349,000, while domestic travel remained steady. The top five carriers at the airport in August were Southwest Airlines, American, Frontier, United, and Delta.

Cargo operations also contributed to the airport’s growth. Ontario handled more than 69,000 tons of cargo in August, up nearly 1% from the previous year. While freight volume decreased by 8%, mail shipments increased by 116%. Overall, cargo tonnage from January to August reached nearly 540,000 tons, a 9.2% increase over the same period in 2024. This growth was positively impacted by a major mail handling contract awarded to UPS by the U.S. Postal Service, as reported by KTLA.

Atif Elkadi, the CEO of the Ontario International Airport Authority, stated, “The fact total passenger and air cargo levels were still on the rise speaks to the resilience of our aviation and shipping partners and the strong appeal of our world-class facilities and services.” The airport also achieved a new customer satisfaction milestone, rising to No. 2 in the latest J.D. Power North America Airport Satisfaction Study for medium-sized airports, according to Yahoo News.
