Schwarzenegger Opposes Prop 50 on Redistricting

Arnold Schwarzenegger, former California governor and famed action movie star, has urged voters to reject Proposition 50, a ballot proposal aimed at redrawing congressional maps in California. On Monday, Schwarzenegger criticized the Democratic-backed initiative, which seeks to add five Democratic U.S. House seats in California to counter President Donald Trump’s efforts to gain five Republican districts in Texas before the 2026 midterm elections.

Schwarzenegger, a Republican, expressed his disapproval of the proposal, stating, “It is insane” and arguing that it would allow politicians to “take the power away from the people.” He further remarked, “It doesn’t make any sense to me that because we have to fight Trump, to become Trump. Two wrongs don’t make a right.” According to MassLive, the plan, led by Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom, involves temporarily setting aside districts crafted by an independent state commission in favor of those designed by Democrats. This could potentially increase the Democratic margin to 48 out of California’s 52 congressional seats, up from the current 43.

Schwarzenegger, who has been vocal about his opposition to gerrymandering, recently shared a photo on social media wearing a “Terminate Gerrymandering” T-shirt, signaling his active stance against the proposal. The outcome of the vote on Proposition 50 will be pivotal in shaping the political landscape ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.
