A New York City man has been charged with murder after allegedly using his vehicle to intentionally hit three people, including 16-year-old Jhoanny Gomez-Alvarez, who died at the scene. The incident occurred early Saturday (September 13) morning in Queens, near Benham Street and Roosevelt Avenue.
According to the Queens District Attorney’s Office, the 38-year-old suspect, Edwin Cruz Gomez, engaged in a verbal and physical altercation with the teen’s stepfather after making inappropriate advances toward Gomez-Alvarez and her mother outside a restaurant. Following the confrontation, Cruz Gomez allegedly drove his Chevrolet Suburban into the group, pinning the teenager against a pole.
After the crash, Cruz Gomez fled the scene on foot but was later apprehended by police. His blood alcohol content was measured at 0.137%, above the legal limit of 0.08%, according to WABC. The suspect faces charges including murder, attempted murder, vehicular manslaughter, and driving while intoxicated.
Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz stated that the office will “seek justice” for the victim and her family. If convicted, Cruz Gomez could face 25 years to life in prison. His next court appearance is scheduled for September 19.
