Former federal prosecutor Maurene Comey has filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration, claiming her dismissal was unlawful and politically motivated. The lawsuit, filed in Manhattan federal court, seeks her reinstatement and a declaration that her firing violated the U.S. Constitution’s “Separation of Powers.” Comey, the daughter of former FBI Director James Comey, has been praised for her work on high-profile cases, including those involving Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell.
According to the lawsuit, Comey’s firing in July occurred a day after she was asked to lead a major public corruption case and three months after receiving an “Outstanding” performance review. The suit alleges her dismissal was due to her father’s public criticism of President Trump or her perceived political beliefs.
The lawsuit names the Justice Department, the Executive Office of the President, U.S. Attorney General Pamela Bondi, and others as defendants. It highlights concerns over civil service protections being overlooked, as several prosecutors have been dismissed without explanation, including those involved in cases that angered President Trump.
Comey gained recognition for her role in prosecuting Epstein and Maxwell, with Maxwell currently serving a 20-year sentence. The lawsuit claims that the politically motivated termination of Comey undermines the justice system’s principles, emphasizing that prosecutors should operate without political influence.
